If you are in a New York car accident, call the police to investigate and file a report. The steps for obtaining a Brooklyn police accident report will depend on which law enforcement agency investigated your case. If you are given any paperwork after the accident, it may indicate which precinct you should contact.

If your accident occurred in Brooklyn, you need to contact one of the Brooklyn precincts of the New York Police Department. Contact the precinct office closest to your accident scene:

You can request a copy of the accident report at the precinct office during the 30 days following your accident.  The process is straightforward.  Simply complete a REQUEST FOR COPY OF ACCIDENT RECORD [PD301-165] and pay a fee of $10, either check or money order, payable to “City of New York, Police Department.”

After 30 days, you can request a copy of the accident report from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.  Complete the NYS DMV form MV-198C and pay a fee of $20.

For accidents that occurred outside of Brooklyn, you can research the area surrounding the accident site and call the nearest precinct.  If there is no nearby precinct, or if the accident occurred outside any city or town, call either the New York State Police or the county sheriff's office.  You will need to have all the relevant information about your accident at hand: the date and place of the accident, as well as the names of all drivers and passengers involved in the accident.
